Well let's see...
If you're going with someone special, I would highly recommend going to Little Italy, which is right downtown, just above Canal Street. The restaurants are cash only, but most are a pretty good bargain. If you're looking to party, then go to the East Village. I personally love a German bar called Zum Schneider on Ave C at 7th St. There's also a really nice Wine Bar on 9th and C called Louis, and a big Spanish restaurant (I forget the name) next to that that I've heard is a lot of fun.
If you want more specifics (certain type of food) let me know, or stop by the HP tkt counter in Newark!
