I will be going to Maui in August this year with my 8 year old and can get great rates at Polynesian Shores-has anyone stayed there, or know it? I don't want this vacation to be a bomb because I pick the wrong place, but the price is definitely right! Also thoughts on things to do or not to do, we heard the Ulalene presentation was excellent but that the highway was a long windy drive and if we get carsick it was a bad idea and the 8 year old would get bored. Thoughts? Suggestions? I want to snorkel and am considering doing the ULalene instead of a Lu-- I can't spell it. The traditional dinner, dance presentation.

Hi Kara,
I was just reading your post on Maui.I went to the Polynesian Shores website just to check it out. Honestly it looks like it is an ok place! It is near Lahaina, which has lots of shops and restaurants. You can snorkel right out front of the Sheraton on Kaanapali. You will have a lot of things close by. You can always drive up to the top of the Volcano with your son. The Road to Hana is beautiful, but long. We had our friends kids with us and it worked out ok cos we stopped at some of the zillion waterfalls along the way so they could jump off and play. We stayed both up in Kaanapali and also on the southern part of Maui in Wialea (think I am spelling that wrong!), which I enjoyed a lot more. It was a lot less crowded and touristy.
Anyway, once you get your car, there is a Costco and a Super KMart near the airport to get your food for your condo. If you go to one of the regular grocery stores, MAKE SURE you fill out one of their store cards for discounts. It doesnt matter that you dont live on Hawaii. It will save you A LOT of money on your food! Also.. did you check out the interline rates on www.outrigger.com ? They are really good to airline employees. Have fun and let me know if I can be of any help!

Hi Kara
First I want to second Debbie's suggestion about Costco, great for groceries etc.
Secondly, Chris the Atlanta correspondent, has a great Maui article, he even has photos, you can read it in the forum's articles section.
You can also post questions directly to Chris in the Atlanta thread.

Have fun and backup big time.

Although I am not familiar with that property... Here is an arial photo of the Polynesian Shores. I hope it can shed a little light on it. We just got back from Maui about 3 weeks ago with our children ages 8 & 9 had a wonderful time they never got bored or carsick even though we drove the perimeter (figure 8) of the entire island. A lot of the guide books say that this can't be done... we found it to be a rather enjoyable and pleasant drive off the beaten path in our midsize rental car. As far as West Maui goes it is rather crowed and the traffic can be rather bad. Also due to the fact that the rainfall in Maui varies from 300" to less than 6" a year depending on which section of the island you are staying. I would suggest a staying in South Maui in either Kiehi, which is mostly condos or Wailea which is mostly upscale resort type properties. Both of thse areas are in the dry section of Maui that gets the less than 6" of rainfall per year. Here is a link to the condo we stayed at http://www.mauikbr.com/index.html. We were very pleased with the accomodations there and are priced very reasonably. They do offer a 10% discount to airline employees off the web rates.

A couple of day trips that I would recommend... The Road to Hana & Seven Sacred Pools, The Olivine pools @ Haleakala volcano . If you feel very adventurous you can hike across the lava fields to a place called the Fish Bowl the snorkeling is very good there. All of these places are covered in detail in a book called "Maui Revealed"...it is one of the best travel guides I have ever read... it should be carried at most bookstores.
