I am going to be in CS in the next 60 days for a week. Can someone suggest interesting places to go, with an emphasis on natural sites within a 3 to 4 hour drive.
Thanks in advance,
Joel

The temperature is dropping, winds out of the north and it's snowing in the Rockies...now I can offer suggestions about the Colorado Springs area.
First it's a good idea to have a vehicle with snow tires (and/or snow chains); trust me on this Joel, I know what I'm talking about.
Pikes Peak--Barr Trail if you're a strong hiker, otherwise take Pikes Peak Highway. Now I've heard the view from Pikes Peak is awesome, however I have no "first hand" knowledge" since on our way up we got stuck in a snowdrift and by the time the tow truck pulled us out it was snowing so hard we just abandoned the trip.
However the tow truck driver did tell us about Pikes Peak Cog Railway, recommended it as an easier way up.
Garden of the Gods-red sandstone formations--Now we did get there, but because of the blowing rain, sleet and hail I can't tell you a lot about it. There is a scenic drive (Rampart Range Road) it takes you north along Rampart Range and meets up with Highway 67, but we didn't take it because we were a ltttle leery about driving with a cracked windshield. ( ohh a lot went wrong on this trip)
Hot air ballooning- weather permitting; it wasn't, so we didn't.
Actually we spent most of our time in the Denver/Colorado Springs area looking for snow chains and trying to remember how to drive on ice. Still it's a beautiful area and I would like to go back there, just not when it's raining, hailing and snowing. BTW, if you're interested in how we faired in Denver, read my Denver Trip Report, but I warn you, it's not for the faint of heart.
Hope you have a great trip.
