Earlier this month, I experienced a $100 deposit requirement from Enterprise on my car rental. The web site (NonRev Network site)mentions nothing of this. For those of us concerned about identity theft, this is something to be aware of.

My brother, traveling as a normal passenger later this month, booked a truck from Enterprise. When he told me about the rental, I asked if he knew about the deposit requirement. He did not. He pushed the issue with his travel agent and confirmed he would have to put up the deposit as well.

This is an old practice from the 1980s or earlier. I rented a car in the DFW area, with a similar requirement. Several months later, a charge to my account appeared from National, who assured me the credit transaction was voided because I paid by check, something they allowed then. It was used by National, to pay for a transaction with another customer. I told my credit card issuer the charge was wrong (name and signature did not match), provided proof of payment and told them I would not pay the charge.

Are any other car rental companies doing this? I would rather do business with another company, and pay a little more, instead of giving Enterprise a $100 loophole into my credit. I did receive a $100 credit back to my account, but still don't like this hidden charge.
