To anyone out there with the power to do this, please don't let passengers with get away with carrying on bags that are normal sized checked bags just to avoid fees/confrontations.

This has been a trend we've seen on the ramp. One its annoying because its just not right. Secondly these bags weigh about the same as a regular checked bags and aren't accounted for the same way on the load slip. Finally the fees are there for a reason, don't let passengers get out of paying for what they should- via individual company rules.

    For/Against?? Any discussions??

Uh-huh, huge carry-ons - the consequence of checked bag fees. Now it's a free-for-all for the limited bin space. Luckily I don't suffer with BSA (Baggage Separation Anxiety) as my tiny little bag, always ends up in a overhead far far away.

Some of these monster carry ons (and I mean the plural!! People think a 'personal item' is another backpack!) don't even fit!

I have a nice little case that fits the carry on dimensions, and I can usually even stuff my purse into it before boarding - that way I minimize my chances of leaving it behind!

I don't care if I'm flying to San Diego or Hong Kong, I always pack everything I'm bringing into a backpack.

That's the way to go. I've only ever taken a roll-aboard to a weeklong training in CVG, and to PUJ because I was carrying half of my mother's stuff.

I've been all over the world with just a backpack, which, to be honest, is really starting to show its wear.

I do feel a little out of place entering the business cabin dress in bizcas with a backpack though.

Now I admit that I sometimes check a bag depending on the length of the trip but I never try to get those huge bags on with me! Out of curiosity, how are these bags accounted for? I work in rez so the airport functions are somewhat of a mystery to me.

    They're not.

If the counter agent fails to identify to large of a carry-on(or if the pax check in online/kiosk) then it is the gate agents responsibility. If the gate agent fails to do his/her job, then it falls on the FA. If the bag has to be checked last minute, it will be loaded in the bin and counted as a standard checked bag on the cargo load report. If the bag can be stuffed into the cabin somewhere, then it is counted as part of the weight of the passenger, and thus, not reported on the cargo load report.
