Do any of you know what a Q tax is? My ticketing officer tried to explain it was some US govt tax?

She quoted me ICN-DFW on KE as around $40USD in this tax, but NRT-MSP on NW was around $200USD with this tax!!! Taking more than half the cost of the ZED.

Never heard of this happening... any ideas?

Hi Nick
Nrt has a airport departure tax. I think that you do not have to pay it if you are connecting in nrt and it is less then a 24 hour connection.

THanks for the info... quick google results the departure tax is only around 20USD though. She seemed adament that it was a US arrival tax of some form. Sent it off to a friend of mine who works in a pass bureau in the US, i'll see what she makes of it

My guess is that it's a fuel surcharge - which vary from airline to airline, station to station. Some carriers are removing or lowering fuel charges to stay competitive; but to the "outside" world, it likely looks pretty random.

According to Delta's Travelnet there are three L (Landing) fees for the US.
$5
$5
$7

Just coming back from CPH sunday the fees are shown as

$21.78 Danish Departure Fee
$5.00 US Landing Fee
$5.00 US Landing Fee
$7.00 US Landing Fee

$38.78 total.

Hope it helps.

As far as I recall though you don't charge fuel surcharges on ZED tickets as it is unclear which airline will collect on them etc.... I know for ZEDs on our oneworld partners like AA we don't get charged them, although she tried it on me once

Q charges (which may or may not be fuel surcharges) are generally imposed by the airline that filed the fare bainst which the ticket is issued. CX does not price ZED against filed fares but must pull some information from the OAL published commercial fare rules. Q, like YQ & YR, cannot be collected on ZED tickets, unless it is imposed by a government or airport authority like the HKG airport Q charge.

Thanks for the info - I dare say the HKG Q is where she got confused and did not manually remove the Q from the fare she quoted me.

I had a friend at Southwest and another friend in ticketing at my own airline re-quote me at the same lower rate, then had to find a tactfull way to ask the person to re-check it without saying it was wrong!

"Q" on NWA is a fuel-surcharge. Politely inform the NWA agent that ZED's do not get charged fuel-surchages. This has happened to me - an employee - trying to buy ZED's on OAL. Once I mentioned it to the different agents each time I call to price one, most place me on hold to verify, while others indicate, "yeah, you are right. Let me remove that fuel surcharge."

A NWA memo came out last June/July stating that fuel-surcharges are not priced in ZED's.

Hey we got a similar memo, no fuel on ZEDs.

It is my own agent ticketing though rather than a NW agent. I asked her to recalculate, should hear soon.

In the meantime I tried to call NW reservations, ended up with KLM, who transfered me to worldperks, who didn't answer but msg had an email, who gave me another email, who finally told me the flight is wide open
