On a recent trip to NOLA my usual crew was joined by two first timers; this is our stroll through the Quarter.
MSY straight down I-10 to Drago’s for char-grilled oysters. I had to stop at two dozen because I forgot ‘Oysters 101’ and dipped the bread - N.O. French bread, one of a kind, no other tastes as good.
The French Quarter is gaudy and definitely touristy BUT you know that going in - you get your “to-go” cup and stroll the blocks people watching and listening to the music.
Our first stop Southern Candymakers for pralines, our newbies - sugar shock.
We walked a couple of blocks and stopped to listen to a street musician playing a jazz trumpet and selling his CD’s, now he was pretty good, buutttt no sales with this group.
Around the corner was a tout shouting about a “club” down a side alley- said we were only “steps from heaven”. I seriously doubt heaven has a huge neon sign and an entry fee, we kept walking. Next up a voodoo shop, skulls, voodoo dolls and potions in bottles. The first timers just had to stop here, bought a voodoo doll and a ritual candle (don’t ask me why) and I bought a small good fortune crystal for my carry-on (and you know exactly why)
Serendipity-
We were on our way to the clubs on Frenchmen but due entirely to one newbie having a weak bladder and this club having no cover charge, we stumbled upon a great club -blues guitar; met some Australians that were having a very good time. They were very vocal in their disappointment in US beers, said they tasted like water and took exception to Budweiser calling itself the King Of Beers. CHEERS!
Headed back to The Square and Cafe Du Monde. That’s the way to end/start a day in the Crescent City - beignets and coffee, and a little jazz.
