The fast ferry Jaume #1 was scheduled to begin operating on Tuesday on the route between Fort Lauderdale and the port of Freeport (Grand Bahama), replacing the current vessel used, the Pinar del Río. This change will make it possible for the shipping company to increase passenger capacity on this service and continue guaranteeing quality service between Florida and the Bahamian island.

The vessel, which was transferred at the beginning of the year from Spain to the Caribbean, has already obtained all of the permits and certificates needed to operate, which will make it possible to increase the passenger numbers offered, since the ship has a capacity for 600 passengers, 150 more than the previous vessel.

Jaume #1, which measures 78 meters long and travels at a speed of 32 knots, offers regular and superior seats as well as a café, shop and services to transport pets and people with reduced mobility.

The shipping company has designed an ambitious expansion plan for the Caribbean area, where it aims to expand new maritime services. Some of the projects planned include a connection between Fort Lauderdale and the port of Nassau, where there is great potential in goods and passenger transport. Moreover, the company plans to also expand to other Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba as part of its future internationalization strategy.

The shipping company, which has operated this service under the Baleària Caribbean brand, carried more than 145,000 people last year (15% more than the previous year). Baleària began operating between the United States and The Bahamas in December 2011 and has carried more than a half million passengers since then.
