The French claim they are the true birthplace of flight. The first balloon flight was in France, as well as the first completely controlled takeoff and landing by Dumont in France.
I cannot vote for Ohio or Indiana as I am from Michigan.
By the way since it is the 100 year anniversary of Ford, did you know he did not have the first automobile assembly line? Oldsmobile predated his factory by 5 years.

Hey, it was a very pretty bed sheet and I only ended up in the emergency room a couple of times.....
The French and the US have always been at odds when it comes to aviation. You could start a fight if you asked a room of Pilots which is better Airbus or Boeing. Probably the same with mechanics.
On a side note, lots of events in conjunction with the 100 anniversary of the Wright Brothers 1st flight. If anyone out there has info please post it on the forum.

Personally I used the swing and towel method. Landed face first in the grass, which totally delighted my sister, who was a firm advocate of the pedaling your bike as fast as you can, fly method.

It seems that this academic argument is all relative. Either state could claim the title as could the French. But let's not forget that the Chineese were playing with winged hand-spun toys that flew thru the air as early as the mid-1500's. Should they get the title for their inventiveness? What about Leonardo Da Vinci? In the late 1400's he designed a machine that we know today as the helecopter. So should he get the prize for fathering the idea thus giving the trophy to Italy?
Like I said its all relative.
