So, do most airlines take a higher zone for a lower zone flight? Do you get refunded or just eat the cost? I know it does not really matter as you will get the unused zeds refunded just hate being sent a bill and wait for refund.

Yes...
With ZED, it eliminates the need for back ups.
I have used ZED since 1996 without any issues.
My first ZED was in July 1996, Air France, SFO-CDG.
The flight was full and so I used it on VS for a SFO-LHR flight.
I have used many ZED tickets for different routes and airlines than were on the ticket and never had anybody question it.
I wouldn't bet on that vulindlela when you travel in Asia. The ball game is totally different. Always have point to point even if it means pain.
I had one ground staff in CAN who wanted to confiscate my inbound coupon because I did not use it. According to her, the tickets comes in pair. Trying to explain ZED=sector to her was a zero. Checking with the ticket office yielded a correct answer, i.e. each is a coupon but to save pain, I flew out of HKG instead.
In Asia, its totally different. If you are not paying full fare, don't expect them to be helpful!
