There should be a table that shows the maximum file size for different types of photos (both resolution and file size). If your file is too big, you'll need to resize it (I think that the standard windows image viewer can do this, and I know that Preview in the Mac can as well). Generally it cannot check this until after the image has loaded, so it may seem like it uploaded, then fail after (the server would just discard it)
For sites like flickr, you need to copy the image location, an option that should come up when you right click the image (should end in .jpg or .png or something like that) and wrap it between [ img ] and [ /img ] (without the spaces inside the []). For example, [ img ]http://nonrev.net/avatars/admin.gif[ /img ] (again, without the spaces) would produce![]()
