    Ah.
    Oh.
This is eminently sensible, but blessed with what may be an intractable problem.
    Passengers just won't sit down.
They're so anxious to get on the plane that they want to be the first in their group to pass through.
We all know the reason for boarding chaos - luggage fees and limited overhead space - it’s first man on gets the bin. I’ve often thought that when boarding, pax should be given a baggage tag with the seat # to be attached to the carryon – bin/bag. Wrong bag in wrong bin- off it goes - gate check. Pax at the end of the line would know they have a space assigned to them (just like BIZ class). Solve the baggage problem and you’ll solve the boarding chaos.

    Priority Boarding a la carte

OK you might have seen this one coming. UA is now offering their economy pax *for a per segment fee* the option of boarding in group 2 - right long with their Premier Gold/Silver, Star Alliance Gold, United MileagePlus members.

"Premier Access® lets you enjoy the convenience of dedicated airport check-in lines, exclusive security lanes at select airports and priority boarding, so you can get to the gate, your seat, and the overhead bin sooner."

I can see the appeal to the economy pax, especially those traveling once/twice a year - Premier members not so much.
It's all about those overhead bins! *wink*
