Thread: Carry-on Bags

I used to travel the world with my old Jansport backpack from high school. Once I started traveling nonstop, I bought a 21x14x9 rollaboard from Delsey, and a new backpack. I expected the rollaboard to wear out after 2-3 months, but to my pleasant surprise it's still going strong(I live out of it, taken it about 400 thousand miles). She's definitely getting close to needing replaced, but she's still got some life left.

****RANT ALERT****I'm sure you guys here all know, but from all the issues at the gate I've seen.....when you unzip the expanding thing, the bag is no longer a legal carryon. I've never done this, but I see it all the time. Usually people argue so much that the gate agent caves and let's the pax carry it on(violating federal regulations in the process), and then as a result an extra pax with a legal carryon must then check theirs. Also, if you need extra leg room, leave your backpack at home. Unless you're in a bulkhead, only one bag goes in the overhead. Really love putting my backpack at my feet, and checking my rollaboard so the pax next to me can stow their laptop bag in the overhead and stretch their legs.

Right now I have a well worn Samsonite, but I’m looking at the Delsey Helium.

My pet peeve - People that put their bag and three-masted wooden model schooner lengthwise in the overhead. And yes the schooner was quite detailed - sails furled.

Good point about the "expansion" feature. When I unzip the daypack, my handbag goes inside, so I am still legal w/1 bag, one personal. Heck--my day pack is still smaller than most bizmen drag on--plus their coats and laptops and...
I love keeping that pack on the floor by my feet, too.
I found the CR900's bins fit my roller!! but I do like the pink tag at the gate for convenience--thta's why the zip off pack makes so much sense for me--I don't risk my netbook or otehr junk I might NEED liek a book, glasses, etc...

I have two carry bags, back packs, one is a toat bag that morphs into a back pack by unzipping the back and pulling out some straps. Its a bag you can't buy, it was actually won via these scratch tickets my father plays because he is bored, and won them using my name, as well as other gear. RED SOX back pack. Nothing big, but great for my short hops here and there. The other back pack actually zips into a roller or unzips to wear as a back pack, for carrying your lap top and other things. These I use in case I don't want to check in luggage. It's a FUL, I picked up at Costco for like 38 bucks. My Marine Corps duffle bag I've had since my USMC days I gave away to a brother that needs it more than I do these days. For the longest time, I carried all of my possessions on this bag, wrote all the countries I've deployed to in magic marker on this bag. Gave it away to a brother that came to visit me and walked out with alot of junk I gave him. I don't miss it.

I still don't have a great carry on. I do a lot on intl non revving which means getting thru at last minute, and the dreaded scenario of having to put your bag 3 rows BEHIND you is not something I enjoy.

I just take my ipad, essentials, ticket wallet in a crumpler bag these days (unless I know I will get J class). Oh and I take a blanket with me now in case I have to fly JQ home... $8 is a bit steep for a blanket.

I used to even take a change of clothes... but not anymore

I have a very lightweight bag from Swiss (like the army knives) which takes pretty much everything I'll need for a week. Mind you, I don't pack a ton of stuff so I can easily fit 6-7 outfits in there and it will fit under my seat. My preference is to check it but I do carry it on when necessary or if the load is light. I also take a backpack from Eddie Bauer for things I need on board which includes food, entertainment, small toiletries and a change of underthings/socks along with my blanket since I'm always cold. You name it, it's probably in there. That backpack has lasted through many trips with no damage. I would buy it again in a heartbeat and Eddie Bauer will replace it if it ever does have issues since it has a lifetime warranty.
