Default Double listing economy/ business (United). Check-in?

I plan to buy a ZED business class pass EWR-DEL (United) and cross my fingers. I understand that I should also buy an economy pass in case business class doesn't work out. (The difference isn't fare difference isn't refundable if I use a business pass for an economy seat.) Purchasing the passes automatically lists me for the flights, so I would be listed twice for the same flight. Should I also check in twice? I think that could create confusion. And checking in could make getting a refund for the pass I don't use a little harder. On the other hand, I am concerned that if I am only checked in for business and am offered an economy seat I will be using the business fare/pass for that seat. I could ask the gate agent to use the economy listing, but does that look like a late check-in to the computer, and does it create additional work at a bad time?
I would like to keep things as clear and easy as possible for the gate.
I'd like to hear from anybody with experience with this, as a traveler or at the gate.
    Thanks.

Are you using e-tickets or paper tickets? Paper should be easy enough. Just hand in the coupon for the class you've been accepted and return the other coupon for a refund. E-tickets on the other hand may be problematic. It could depend on the efficiency and willingness of the gate agent and as you mentioned time constraints coming down to the crunch of clearing the wait list and closing the flight. As far as I know, its doable, but may prove a hassle. Additionally check UA's policy about listing twice for the same flight.

I can answer that: don't do it. I'm more than happy to tell you how much of a chance you have at getting a seat in C, though! Just give me the date(s) and I'll see what's there.

It is an e-ticket, and id90.com automatically does the listing when the e-ticket is purchased. It doesn't give me the option to purchase without listing.
Normally I like that-- saves a step. But in this case it makes it a little harder to be responsible and considerate.

This is the part of the pass agreement explanation that makes me think I need both:
"Travelers must hold an e-ticket for the cabin they travel in. You can purchase both Business class and Coach class tickets, and refund the unused pass. Purchasing a First Class ticket provides you with additional options, but does not guarantee a seat in FC, it only increases your chances of boarding the flight. NOTE: If you choose to sit in economy class if first/business class is full, there is no refund given on the difference between economy class and first/business class e-tickets."

I will post again closer to my travel date to get an idea for loads so I can know whether trying for business class would be wasting my time. I'm is still a month out.

    Thanks.

Well, I can tell you that J has been filled for the past 10 days on that route, if that helps any. Could be because of other nonrevs, but I'm sure you know you'll be at the bottom of the list. Again, I'm happy to look at loads for you closer to departure (PM me if you want, I'll get an email notification) so you can get a better idea - but I wouldn't count on it
