I remember way back when UA had a meaningful operation at JFK - LHR, NRT, HKG, SEA, CDG, CCS, EZE, GRU and DEN to name a few. Now JFK will only serve SFO and LAX.

But once we picked up a hub in EWR, and IAD is nearby, JFK is just not really necessary. Plus, JFK is saturated with competition. While I'd like to see a little more than LAX and SFO flying in, there are worse airports to (almost) pull out of

This is true. 2 Cities nobody wins market share - LAX and JFK. With that being said, EWR should be paramount in the completion process of UA/CO. IAD is dilapidated and bleeding no revenue. FYI, DL just added EWR - LHR ....

True, but at least IAD has underlying potential. Lots of government workers (both foreign and domestic), a rapidly growing city, and the private sector jobs that go along with it (Lockheed Martin, for example).
