Hi, I'm currently waitlisted at s3b, flight is over sold in coach, airport list is 0 with 6 HK's and 4 nonrevs ahead of me, 8 biz seats still show avail in airport list.. how is this going to play out.. do they give those seats up front to HK's or how is the priority on that.. thanks in advance.. Jürgen @ JNB hoping to get to DFW via ATL

Hello to Jurgen South Africa!! One of our favorite places in the world--and one of the hardest to nonrev....
Sadly, there are issues beyond seat count that can effect your chances. One is station mgr doesn't want to bother w/nonrevs if it means a delayed takeoff. You have to get cleared (after all the paperwork--cargo etc) then get thru security and make it to the gate.
HK's are inconvenienced OR unassigned seats for rev ticket pax, and rarely, Pos Space staff.
What date? Maybe I can give a second opinion. We travel S2 thru JNB and once didn't make it and had to connect thru Dubai.

Hi mrs767er, per advice read on this forum I stuck around after they announced twice that flight was full and no more standbys would be accepted. Suddenly they called me up. Apparently 2 girls got kicked off drunk and I was next in line. So happily was escorted and rushed by delta staff to gate and given seat 4A. Just landed in Atlanta! Glad I found this forum!

Ok, you are not the only one I have heard this from. There is an employee here in IND, who experienced this at JNB. He also said that the manager takes bribes from revenue customers for upgrades.
My question is why does DL put up with this? It seems to be common knowledge that is happens.

We had 17 NRs and KNEW the loads from our deltanet access--they annmounced no NRs and a few people went to the desk; we all followed. Gee-we ALL got on with some noise--most up front! Even OALs
The biggest problem is the station mgr is as I mentioned re: paperwork/on-time performance. I would not doubt corruption as well, as it is rampant at JNB--baggage theft is HORRIBLE--it is part of the Johannesburg attitude. Fake terminal handlers are scamming tourists by the armfuls. It's scandalous and it effects the entire airport.

Unfortunately that is not isolated to JNB but alot of the African airports are like this, I have heard horror stories from REVENUE passengers in Lagos, Abuja etc., etc.
I have always wanted to visit South Africa but I would stay away from the nonstops to the US on DL or SAA, namely becasue I am sure this has got to be one of the toughest flights in the DL system to get on (because of heavy loads, high nonrev count, and possible weight penalty issues with the aircraft).
Other than the bad service on EK, was it easy to get on the flight from JNB to DXB on Emirates or did they put you through hoops to get on the flight.?

    Regards,

    Chepos

Hah, that Sun Country flight to London is so weird to me MSP-London in a 737, with a stop in Gander (just like the old days of commercial aviation). It was Stansted last year, which is great if you're taking a RyanAir flight after, but for one reason or another they decided to change it.

By the way, I'm not sure if it includes that LGW flight or not, but if you need to I think DL employees get a pretty good flat-rate on SY. At SkyWest, it's $25 (plus taxes, I'm sure) and we generally piggyback off of DL's agreements. This only works for the employee, however, no dependents.

Chepos--It was pretty easy to go to EK counter w/zed; they gave us seats w/plenty of time to gate. Pretty sure we got the last 2 in coach (or close to that) More seats avail up front (2 classes) but not for zeds. DXB didn't leave for 12-15 hrs I think, so we got day room at Arabian Courtyard--reasonable w/taxi--around $100 US--didnt use Bfast. So exhausted from EK flt we just slept. Too bad cuz it's next to a museum and near the gold and spice souks. You could really enjoy the short layover if timed right.
