I have NEVER had any issue with a US car rental agency. I keep my paperwork, know the terms of my rental and have never had any desk agent try anything funny. I have no idea what RM is talking about.
First thing I do when leaving the airport car rental area is look for the gas station. Who wouldn't?
I get miles on EVERY rental that allows DL miles, card is not required for earning (use for hotel cards, too)--which only works IF you have a Skymiles account.
I rent my cars prior to arriving and already know what to include/exclude. I always check for any issues on the body and mark questionable ones before departing. I will turn down upgrades to larger, uncomfortable cars ($ gas and crappy ride) unless no alternative.
I have no idea what "schemes" RM mentions. If the price is right and the terms are good for you, don't fear the rental. I do NOT like third party sights vs 25% off emp discounts.
    Cheers!

We usually rent from Hertz. We used to use National but since Enterprise has been changing things, their prices have gone up and aren't usually competitive.

The AAA rate is usually the best. I book a car as soon as we know we'll need one. Then I check a week before the rental date to see if there's a better price and if there is, I book it and cancel the original. And then, I check the day before wheni know that I'm taking the trip and need the car and most times thee's a Pre-Pay option with the AAA rate which save a decent amount, and that's what I book and cancel whatever I had.

There's one other issue we had with them is that the E-Z Pass RF proof unit on the windshield partially opened (not something you can see easily) and we got billed for a number of tolls. They won't remove the E-Z PAss, so now we tape the until closed when we pick up a car and it has one in it.
