We usually rent from Hertz. We used to use National but since Enterprise has been changing things, their prices have gone up and aren't usually competitive.
The AAA rate is usually the best. I book a car as soon as we know we'll need one. Then I check a week before the rental date to see if there's a better price and if there is, I book it and cancel the original. And then, I check the day before wheni know that I'm taking the trip and need the car and most times thee's a Pre-Pay option with the AAA rate which save a decent amount, and that's what I book and cancel whatever I had.
There's one other issue we had with them is that the E-Z Pass RF proof unit on the windshield partially opened (not something you can see easily) and we got billed for a number of tolls. They won't remove the E-Z PAss, so now we tape the until closed when we pick up a car and it has one in it.
