I am not an expert, but I know one.....
I have been to Scotland twice, plus my Godchild just married a native. If you have any Scotland questions please let me know.

My partner and I are traveling to GLA in early August. We'll be staying in the City Centre. Is there anything not in the tour books that we should see?
Any good restaraunts/pubs we should try? Preferably casual and cheap.

We spent a small amount of time in GLA but will consult with Friends who lived just west in the seaside town of Largs.
I would suggest you spend at least one day traveling north. Loch Lomond is a short trip out of town and gives you a taste of the highlands.
For History catch a train east and go to Edinburgh. It can be done in a day trip. Edinburgh compared to Glasgow is as different as NYC compared to Washington DC.
Will write as I get more info. Or maybe Nic from London can be of assistance.

It's some time since I was in Glasgow so cannot really advise - I went to see some bands at King Tut's Wah-Wah Hut http://www.kingtuts.co.uk/ , then went to a club off Sauciehall Street - best thing to do is probably pick up a listing guide for some current info, but I will check for pubs with people at work.

Otherwise make sure you go to the art gallery at Glasgow Uni (includes Christ by Dali), and, as Coyne says, Edinburgh is completely different and just 30 minutes away on the train.

Hope this is some help!

i agree if you can get too edinburgh, it holds a lot more history than glasgow, you can get buses between the 2.
If you can travel around the area, especially the highlands you will have a great time. If you can understand what they say.
who are you travelling with to het there?

Rob,
Make sure that you have your accommodation in GLA booked as August is Festival time in Edinburgh and it is so popular that all the accomodation goes and so GLA also gets booked up. If you have accom and intend to to visit EDI then check out the festival websites ( use search engine ) to see whats on. Theres normally a lot of free/cheap street theatre.
