Amsterdam is a lot of fun! Even if you're not into the hash scene you should stop into a cafe just for the experience - no purchase necessary!

There are several good museums including the Ann Frank House. It's a great multi-media presentation mixed with the original surroundings. There are some great videos about free speech vs. personal rights, freedoms & protections. It really makes you think - no matter which side of the isle you sit on. Another great place is the Van Gogh museum.

If you're looking for an out of town experience try Delft. It may sound familiar as it's the place where the pricy and exclusive Delft Ware is produced. It's about an hour by train from Central Station. You can tour the factory and museum for a minimal charge.

You can also visit a couple of churches nearby. New Church is one of the principal places of the Royal Family. Most monarchs are buried in the cript. For a small fee you can climb to the top of the bell tower for a fantastic view of the city and surrounding countryside. Its quite a climb and the stairway gets somewhat narrow but its worth it.

    Hope you have fun!

There are plenty of easy day trips from AMS as well, and train fares aren't too expensive--just have someone show you how to use the train ticket machine as the ones outside AMS Centraal Station aren't labeled in English.

On a trip to the Netherlands in April, I spent half my time based in Haarlem, half in A'dam and did day trips to Leiden, Den Haag, Aalkmar, Zaanse Schaans, Hoorn, Utrecht, and there are many other cute Dutch citites that are an easy day trip as well. Kids will enjoy Madurodam, "Holland in Miniature" near Den Haag.

Canal cruises are always fun, and the flat terrain is perfect for cycling. AMS has an easy to use tram system to get around town to visit the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseums, Anne Frank House, Maritime Museum, the Oudekerke in the Red Light District, the Heineken Brewery, and much more.

A good guidebook will give you lots of ideas. Unfortunately, mine is packed away right now, so I can't give you as many specifics as I'd like to.I have a few pictures on the web site listed in my profile.

    Good luck!
