Hi!
I live in the USA in CO. I am new to both non-rev and international travel. I just found out there will probably be no raises until next year. Told my hubby, and he said, "Lets go somewhere then."
We decided on Ireland/Scotland. Money is tight, and we have been looking into hostels, are there any other good alternatives? My mother-in-law suggested eating in the pubs, but she stayed in really nice hotels so had no advice on inexpensive yet not undesireable lodging.

Thanks from an ever grateful newbie.

Dobhran,
If you really mean hostelling in the European sense then try checking out the Scottish and Irish Youth hostel associations at http://www.syha.org.uk/ and http://www.hini.org.uk/ respectively.

We have 3 good hostel links in The Nonrev Portal:

http://www.nonrev.net/portal/lodging.htm
(scroll to the bottom, it's the next to last category)

Also, do a search of this forum. I think there have been a few Ireland discussions.

Evan, our SLC Correspondent loves Ireland. I'll send him this discussion.

Yes Chris, I do love Ireland. I lived there for a few years and traveled the whole country.

I dont know what kind of tight budget you are on, but the B&B's are pretty cheap. They run about $25.00 per person (us$) if that is in your budget then you are set because they are on about every corner and are the prefered place to stay.

I love the B&B's because you never need to plan where you are going to stay and spend all day trying to find the place. Just travel and enjoy and then when you are done for the day, drop in to one and ask if they have a room. The are usualy available. If not, go to the next one that is down the street. There are so many, that you never need to reserve and you will always find a room.

Take lots of pictures, and dont worry about taking a good camera. I was told that it was not safe and things would get stolen, but if you use common sense and dont leave things in the car in plain sight and lock things up (just like home) you will be fine.

You will find the people to be the friendliest in the world. they are great.

Enjoy and when you get back, give us a report.

Things to see:

Blarney Castle
Tyrone Crystal factory
Waterford Crystal Factory
Dublin City
Ring of Kerry
Belfast City
Port Rush / Port Stewart
Tons of Castles.
