UA do not charge. Zed's are calculated based upon flown sectors, ID's in the same way.
If the fare flown exceeds the value of the ticket, no refund is due. However, taxes are calculated and any unused taxes are returned. If there is still a substantial validity on the coupon and there is no refund due, I return the coupon to the empolyee and ask them to hold on to it if they should care to use it again within it's validity, if not, providing it's returned within 1 year of issuance, we will issue a refund of the unused taxes.
Since it's the taxes on employee tickets rather than the fare itself, it can be substantial !
Alaska Air does not charge employees or dependents either.
