So lately i've been buying less and less backup tickets when I travel. Aside from the fact the AUD is terrible at the moment (and all our ZED agreements are in USD!!), it takes our company a minimum of 2, if not 3 months to refund unused coupons.

I once met another non rev in LAX who worked for AA who told me her carrier refunded tickets in cash at the counter, or she could mail them back from her destination and the money was credited right away. (As an aside, meeting her got me the AA refund dept address, which with a nice letter got me a refund between the ZED fare and walkup ticket i had to purchase one day when Southwest was delayed... it pays to talk to people you meet!)

So throwing it out there... how long does it take the rest of you to get a refund on your unused coupons??

About 3-4 weeks on paper tickets but next day on e-tickets ( probably their only virtue in backup terms )..

We have to mail them in at NW and it usually takes about 1-2 weeks.

Since all of our nonrev tickets are paper (we don't use tickets on our own airline), we have to turn them in for refund. This takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the credit card company. All in all, it's pretty fast.

Quite impressive... if i worked at HDQ i think it's better, but here still 2 months Infact if i worked at HDQ you can get as many tickets you want (from a machine) and you don't get billed until you use one! Ah life in the outports....

So after writing this, my most recent refund came in within a month. Turns out i'd been sending it to the wrong person....

Actually, AA ticket offices will issue on the spot refunds back to the original form of payment and only if the ticket was wholly unused. Otherwise the ticket must be sent to AA's refund department for processing.

As for getting a refund on the difference between the ZED and the walk-up commercial fare, I'm actually very suprised as this is not normal policy for AA, or any other airline that I'm aware of. You got lucky, I think.

I don't doubt it I never heard from them at all, just saw that the money had been credited back on my card. I have to admit I tell everyone this story when they downtalk AA - everyone who i've encountered there has been nothing but nice to me.

I also learned a big lesson, never take the last flight of the day that will allow you to connect to an international flight, even if it is wide open
