Most US carriers require that but many non-US carriers do not, unless the segment exeeds 9000 miles. If LA does not have traffic rights between AKL-SYD, they may not require, nor may the the ticketing carrier be able to issue, separate coupons. You should consult with your staff travel office before having the ticket issued. They should have more specific information regarding your agreement with LA. Also, be sure it is LA operating the flight. I know LA has a codeshare with QF in this market (operated by QF).
