First off, Hi everyone. I haven't been in here for a few months. I've been too busy with school to travel much.

I was furloughed from continental on the 19th of July. I can still travel until the end of the year but I am thinking of jumping ship. I don't know if I can wait for them to bring me back. I am thinking about working at the airport for Delta or Southwest in SLC.

I know that it is not the best time to look for a job, but can someone from those airlines tell me how things look. What is the best way to get in? Can someone give me a referral? Anything that I should know about when I apply?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

    Mike

I don't know what the hiring situation is in SLC but I know there are a few positions springing up. Southwest is or will be opening LGA, BOS, and MKE all within only a few months of each other and as a result there are some internal job listings posted. Once we allow our people to shuffle around and make transfers, which ever vacancies spring up as a result will surely be posted externally.

I see your avatar is "res agent". Are you strictly looking for a res position? That may be more challenging since that's sort of been a dwindling dept over the years. Would you be interested in customer service, operations, ramp, provisioning, or anything else? Would you be able to relocate to a new city?

My advice would be to try and get a job with Southwest doing ANYTHING. Once you do that it'll be very simple to move around and land in the position that you set out for.

If you're able to get an interview with Southwest, you'll really need to knock them dead with your personality. Our hiring strategy is very unconventional as we're a very unconventional company. Be personable, be outgoing, be friendly, be funny, and be HUMBLE. What ever you think you've learned working an any other airline job in the past, leave it at the door. You might as well have been working as a car salesman as far as we're concerned.

I am giving up the reservations department. I would like to work at the ticket counter or gate. I am not opposed to working the ramp either. When I started with Continental I had originally planned on going corporate after I received my degree but that hasn't panned out.

    Mike:

num1bearsfan hit the nail right on the head: we are looking for people with a great attitude and we are hiring. Go to Southwest.com and click on careers at the bottom of the page, and you will go directly to our careers page. There are cust serv listings for PHX and other cities, plus other jobs available. Once you are part of the 'family' you can move about as jobs become available. This is an outstanding company and we could not be prouder to be a part of of it, I hope you have the opportunity to someday soon enjoy being a part of it as well. Good luck with your career plans!
