Most taxes, including the UK APD, are departure taxes but there are some arrival taxes as well. The US International Transportation tax (USD16.70) applies on departures AND arrivals to the US. The MX Toursim tax (USD21.95) applies to arrivals into Mexico. There are more, but not many.
Yes only on departure but if you are connecting in LHR from another airline to your own airline just ask to be considered as a through passenger and a big chunk of this taxes should be waived.
It will not work the other way coming to LHR on your own airline and taking a flight on another airline.
