    Hmm, this is interesting. Just checked TIMATIC, the immigration requirements database IATA keeps. Assuming US nationality, I see this line:

    VALID VISAS OR RESIDENT PERMITS IN EXPIRED PASSPORTS ARE
    ACCEPTED PROVIDED HOLDING VALID PASSPORT OF THE SAME
    NATIONALITY

    Maybe the embassy website is a little out of date? I think that this is kept pretty well updated, since outdated info would be a huge liability for the airlines.
