To avoid any refund problems with myIDtravel it is better to get the two segments separate unless there are no other alternatives with the choice of carrier. In general you can change the return date on the pnr. I never had any problems going with a OW ticket except believe or not one time in YYZ. I am a Us citizen and end up transiting there on the way home, the Canadian immigration agent asked me if I had a ticket to prove that I would leave the country, I did not have a print out of my pnr and was quite surprised by such a requirement.
