Thanks, I had a look at the Beverly Garland which looks good but unfortunately they charge for kids over 12 which makes it more expensive although I might give them a call direct and see what price they can do. (We have 2 kids both under 15).

Also we have roughly mapped out our itinery - LA up the coast road to Hearst Castle and Carmel and Monterey and to SF then to Yosemite, Death Valley and Las Vegas and back to LA (if it sounds familiar might be as it is basically what you suggested when we were thinking of coming over earlier this year!) So any suggestions as to sights and places to stay would be appreciated. The Aussie dollar is getting better but the exchange rate still isn't great.
