Usually I suggest people stay at the Holiday Inn <a href="http://www.beverlygarland.com/" target="_blank">http://www.beverlygarland.com/</A> The airline rate this summer has been running around $75. (parking $9) The hotel also offers "kid suites" rooms. If you give me a time period I'll check around and see if I can come up with something cheaper.
Also the Times has been running a 2 for 1 coupon for Universal Studios. The coupon is good for up to 2 free admissions with 2 full priced paid adult admissions, a very nice savings. (offer expires 8-31-03) Contact me PT when you get your hotel and I'll have it at the desk for you.

Thanks, I had a look at the Beverly Garland which looks good but unfortunately they charge for kids over 12 which makes it more expensive although I might give them a call direct and see what price they can do. (We have 2 kids both under 15).
Also we have roughly mapped out our itinery - LA up the coast road to Hearst Castle and Carmel and Monterey and to SF then to Yosemite, Death Valley and Las Vegas and back to LA (if it sounds familiar might be as it is basically what you suggested when we were thinking of coming over earlier this year!) So any suggestions as to sights and places to stay would be appreciated. The Aussie dollar is getting better but the exchange rate still isn't great.

You've really planned a great road trip. One suggestion, if you're a member of an auto club in Australia check to see if they have an agreement with the AAA here. AAA is great for maps, guidebooks, etc., plus many hotels/motels while not offering an airline rate will offer AAA rates. AAA guidebooks I never start a road trip without them.
Oh, when you see an In-N-Out Burger restaurant, stop; great burgers and fries.

If you're interested in staying in Yosemite, the park has accommodations ranging from the Ahwahnee Lodge, to cabins to tents. www.yosemitepark.com Now I do have friends who've stayed in the tents and love it, but I never could figure out how to get all my stuff in the "bear lockers"so I've always stayed in nearby Oakhurst. Last time we stayed at the Best Western Yosemite Gateway Inn (around 15 miles from the south entrance) plenty of room and no bear lockers.

Not sure about the "bear lockers". I don't think I'd get a good night sleep so will stay away from the tents!
