I was planning on flying PVR-GDL so I called AM reservations to check loads.
The Agent said there are 20 open seats but that they only allow a certain number of nonrevs per flight and this particular flight has 4 listed.
They said I wont be able to get on.

I cannot imagine them leaving with empty seats as long as there are no weight issues but I know to expect anything when nonreving.

Has anyone flown AM? What was it like?
This all sounds bizzare, has anyone else experienced this?

Yea, that does sound bizzare. Try calling again to another agent. Maybe this one person you talked to has an attitude and or doesn't know diddly what he/she is talking about.

Here is a report on AM and their express carrier-Aerolitoral.

I had ZED tickets on AM for PVR-GDL and then GDL-CUL.
At PVR, they told me that they cannot accept my ticket because it is Aerolitoral on an AM flight number and that I would have to buy a ticket for $80, which I did do. They said I would have to buy a GDL-CUL ticket for $200 also.
    Anyway,
In GDL, it was the same situation, only they had no problem accepting my zed ticket and off I went to CUL without any issues.

I think I will avoid using AM in the future unless absolutely necessary.

You should look at the reference file from your airline about travelling on AM mine says:
If I look at the rule for AM it says:
INLCUDES TRAVEL ON FLIGHTS OPERATED BY AERLITORAL FOR AM, AND TRAVEL BY AEROLITORAL EMPLOYEES ON (the airline I work for)

Maybe the Gate agent did not know what he/she was doing (there are more and more contractors at ATO)or did not liked you in any case I would have asked to talk to a supervisor.
I will travel on AM soon and I will print the reference file

    Ours says the same thing.
We are a Skyteam member and so is AM.
I just chalk this up as an inexperienced agent.
No big deal, life goes on.
