Not been to Montana but been to Alaska. Go to Anchorage, rent a car and drive around the Kenai peninsula, just go around, quite scenic. The drive from Anchorage is beautiful, you can actually see whales and cliffs with mountain rams climbing around. Also there is Portage glacier a must see on the way to the peninsula. Go to Seward, have some Chinese food there. See the Copper river, the Russian river, then drive to Sedontla. Anchorage is kind of a not so pretty town, but they have the Chugach mountains all around. Then you can drive north another day to Talkeetna, a quite interesting little town. Not much there, but you can go into a log cabin where they sell coffee and food. Very scenic, nice looking woods. Or you can go fishing in Seward, go catch some Halibut, gotta have some king crab too. I went in May a few years back, it was still cold and the elevation to Kenai peninsula was snowing and snow covered. It was raining around Anchorage when we left to Kenai. You can rent a plane ride to see Mount McKinley in Talkeetna. I didn't do this but I'm sure its great. They have hiking trails outside of Anchorage, going towards Wasilla, a very nice interesting town too. I put some pictures up of Alaska on virtual tourist. Go see Hatcher's Pass. Great ride there.
