    I think it used to be that F and Y were the same cost on 2-cabin planes. May have changed after the switchover, though. If the employee wants to be really nice, he could do a payroll deduction instead, and you pay him back. That way the charge would be made AFTER the flight is taken, and at the right charge. This is probably only an option if your friend is an employee of United, not one of the other carriers (SkyWest, GoJet, etc). I know SkyWest stopped doing that. They told us that even UA employees couldn't do payroll deduction anymore (everyone liked that option) but when I started at UA, we could. Not sure if that was always the case or not, though.

    Just curious-- my airline you go online to book the buddy pass with myidtravel.com for your friend, and it calculates everything on the spot. Is that not how it works on other carriers?
