I have to laugh about getting "maam'd" My first one was a horror!!! Drive thru bank window and the "kid" maam'd me!! I guess his momma taught him to be respectful but I was only in my 40's and it freaked me out. I told him so and he turned bright red!!

I have to say regarding your comment above, I would never expect American to upgrade me on any of their flights while flying zed. Power trip or not--that is policy--OALs are not automatically upgraded on zeds. If they are upg'd, it's by the case/agent. If that makes an agent "not as nice" in your book, that sounds pretty harsh; as though you're entitled to it. Maybe some other time...I am glad the flight crew attended to you with amenity kits and prosecco--I love the bubbly, too!

I guess it's because it's my first time traveling on a ZED - I assumed it was the same as the old ID90 days - (didn't know you couldn't get upgraded even if seats were available) - and in this case, this particular agent was just not nice to begin with - not just because she didn't upgrade us.) My point to all of this was definitely not to dis ANY agent who follows the rules - I simply didn't know the ZED rules. This agent was just particularly ... um... snippy about it, and I had had a super long day to begin with. (I would have to add though, if I was an agent working the gate, and all passengers were boarded, and I had plenty of seats open in front and back and non-revs on the standby list, they would be in F.)

That said, now that I KNOW the ZED rules, I won't be expecting any UPG's the next time I use one, so that's the end of that. And when you don't expect, you don't get disappointed. :-) I LIKE that! And - as I said before - I was AWFULLY happy to get /seats/ on that airplane!

I just wanted to give a heads up to any one else 'living in the past' that the days of (for lack of a better term) 'automatic upgrade' (if seats are available) are gone and not to expect it. (Altho it seems like I'm the only ignoramious one still living in the days when the earth's crust was still cooling.) oy - Not meaning to be harsh, I promise! Didn't mean to come across of 'deserving' - that is truly not my intent. Sorry!

I do not really believe that is has something to do with ZED or ID90. These are kinds of agreements, 99% of them are always for coach class only. The difference between them are just how much do they cost, and how are they priced. Thats all.
Some airlines will let you seat in business, but it doesnt mean at all that you have been upgraded.
Upgrading a ticket means that the class shown in your ticket is changed to a superior class, which has nothing to do with clearing you in a seat upfront or in economy class.
There are a few airlines that usually clear all employees with the "best sit of the house", and other that not. I personally think that it is something related with the management, not the frontline employees. If the rules said that all nonrevs clear in business and then coach, why would anyone give you a seat at the back?
But let me tell you something: near 99.9% of airlines will clear you in economy, I only know Delta, Continental and BA, that upgraded me on a ZED ticket. The rest will give you a seat at the back.
Also, be prepared with flight listings. Nowadays it is something necessary for checking-in somebody. If you arrive at the airport without your listing, you should expect nothing but leaving you behind the corner waiting for someone to have a minute to do it for you.

Oh gosh, I never meant for this to start a discussion on who's right and who's wrong and who's 'deserving' of upgrades - I apologize for giving that impression - let me try and give a (sort of) short explanation: I seem to remember (I could VERY EASILY BE WRONG) that DL employees were not charged for non-rev travel; therefore, it didn't matter if they were accommodated in the front or the back, so (to my understanding) they would always accommodate in the front first. And when it got down to OA employees, it seems like the same rules would apply. This is years ago, though! With AA, we have ALWAYS (at least since 1982) been charged a fee for non-rev; almost nothing for coach, and usually at least double or more for F. But our F class cabin is ALMOST ALWAYS full w/revenue pax anyway, so we rarely get to sit up front (which is most likely the reason no one here ever gets upgraded on AA, either!)

Again, I did not mean to sound like a 'whiney' complainer - I truly am grateful I got on board that aircraft! It was a lovely flight! I just haven't flown in a very long time and things have changed quite a bit, that's all!

I do appreciate all the comments, though! You guys are keeping me on my toes, and giving me lots of useful information! Thanks!
(Just please don't call me 'maam' :-)

oh - and SpainFlier - thanks for the reminder on the flight listing - I always do that, but it's a great reminder to folks - ESPECIALLY for international! You would HATE to left behind because of THAT...:-(

You’re right about that ohmiss, nonreving has certainly changed. Gone are the days when I’d plan my trip around the loads in First and the flights with caviar service.*wink* Remember salad carts and salad prepared with tomatoes and just the right amount of fresh cracked black pepper. Remember the FA wheeling out the dinner cart and carving the chateaubriand in front of the first class cabin? - Yup nonreving has changed, and for that matter, so has first class.

Oh yeah the duvets are nice, but it's the Bose headphones and the adjustable lumbar massage that I love. Unfortunately the FA's always remember to pick up the headphones.*wink*
