Default Italy - August or September

Do you think it's better to travel to Italy in August or September?

Europe in general is probably better in September. Temperatures are going to be a bit cooler, but still nice, and with school back in full swing crowds/loads will be a lot more manageable.

I'd avoid August--temps can be ferocious. I remember Budapest, Bucharest and Rome when it was over 100. Eu vacation period has ended and our little darlings are usually in class.
