    Default Easter Island

I want to participate in the Easter Island marathon. Does anyone know how full the flights usually are from SCL to IPC? I want to nonrev but as the entry fee is $400, I can't afford to miss it if I register. There is a flight every day so I figure if I go a couple of days early I won't have an issue but wondered if anyone had any first-hand knowledge?

Do me a favor. When you successfully return from your visit, take some pics and give me a good informative report on Easter Island. I suspect that could be one very cool visit.

Hell no. Them flights run 800 bucks each way. That's roughly 1600 round trip. Give or take a couple hundred. I just checked it with LAM online. I'd definately for that money try to zed it out there and back. BUT. if you get bumped, Rapai Nui sounds very seriously isolated. I'd be checkin into boat rides into Ecuador if I got stuck as a non rev. I bet you can hauk a ride on a tuna runner or supply boat back to the mainland. Then you gotta get to Quito. That would be one helluvanadventure.

My rule of thumb is that if I cannot afford to miss something, I buy at least a 1 way ticket to get me there. You can nonrev home if you want but make sure you can get there. Do you have or know anyone who has miles? At $800 a pop, that would be a good use of the miles.

The quote was "I can't afford to to miss it" . So like a bereavement, you do what you got to do...

Which leaves my other question. Who the hell pays 400 bucks to run a race? You'd have to pay me to run.

I misread your post, I thought you had SLC. There are enough flights out of SCL that if you could ZED I would think it was doable. You might go a few days before the marathon then buy a ticket if you do not make it. Due to the marathon flights might be full within a few days of the race. Tickets are about $600 r/t from SCL, how much are ZED tickets? is the difference between the two worth it?

I know it aint the same, but just go there when there isn't a marathon. A. You get there easily as a nonrev. B. You don't have to fight for jacked up hotel rates, or thatched home rates, whatever billeting they may have on the island. C. You got the whole island to yourself, take a native or two from the island that can run with you so you know where to go. Or just run by yourself all over the island make up your own T-shirt. "I ran all over Easter Island SOLO" and all I got was this louzy T-shirt".

I want to do a marathon on every continent, Easter Island is my South America one. (My first was Athen, Greece. It was amazing and ended in the 1896 Olympic stadium and I entered to Chariots of Fire playing on the PA system.) I walk, I don't run though so it's not such an issue. The race entry does include 3 dinners including at least 1 cultural/dance celebration which on its own would probably be around $100. Even a regular race in the states costs about $100-$150. This is the main issue I have for going.

For my hotel, I had one booked for $44 that was listed as #5 out of 22 "hotels" on the island. Then I looked on hostelworld.com and found a hostel with a private room, shared bathroom and free breakfast for $34. I could also do a dorm style for $17 a night.

I called LAN and it looks like I would be fine going in and out as long as they don't do some form of payload optimization.

Does anyone else work for DL and know how many seats usually go toward payload optimization in and out of SCL?
